The Gold Coast may be famous for schoolies and the glitter strip, but as we locals know, there is far more to the region than Surfers Paradise. Our coast has an ageing population, with the number of seniors expected to rise to 20% by 2031, so we thought we’d take a look at what the Gold Coast lifestyle has to offer its more mature residents.
Gold Coast Beaches
We can’t write a blog post about the Gold Coast without mentioning the beach. With 70km of pale sandy beaches, the seaside is popular with many residents. Take a leisurely stroll along the oceanway or sit back and watch your grandkids play on one of the many beachfront playgrounds. Tallebudgeera Beach and Palm Beach estuary are particularly popular spots, where you can swim in sheltered waters.
If you’d prefer to stay dry and off the sand, you might like to do a spot of whale watching. Here on the Gold Coast whale watching season runs from May to November and you don’t even have to step on board a boat. You can see pods of whales frolicking from the beachfront.
Club Membership
We’re lucky on the Gold Coast to boast a large number of social clubs. Sit back at your local RSL or surf club where you can play trivia, have a quiet drink and take in the views over a delicious meal. Or challenge your friends and family to a game of bowls while enjoying free, live entertainment. We really are spoilt for choice with friendly bowls clubs located at Robina, Mudgeeraba, Tugun, Burleigh Heads—there seems to be one in almost every suburb on the coast!
Market Scene
If shopping is more your pace, you’re in luck as we have a burgeoning market culture on the Gold Coast. Browse Sunday arts and craft markets along the beach or discover the finest fresh Australian produce at one of the many farmers’ markets dotted throughout the region. You can even treat yourself to dinner at one of the street food night markets that have become a staple of the Gold Coast market scene.
Community Gardens
For the green thumbs out there the Gold Coast is home to a number of community garden projects. These projects are a great way for residents to get involved in their local community, pass on their knowledge or learn new things. If you are interested in conservation you could volunteer to look after our natural green spaces by joining a bush or land care group.
