Seniors who have lived in their homes for many years can find themselves facing a worrying decision with regards to moving. This was the dilemma Beverly was faced with. So many of my senior clients have to deal with a sudden change in the form of health problems, loss of a spouse or financial issues.

A couple of years ago Beverly, had a difficult choice to make. She realized the big house with all its memories could no longer be part of her future. She had lost her husband a few years back and was just barely coping and keeping up with the bills.  The straw that broke the camel’s back, however, was the $500 she paid someone to mow the grass and rake the leaves. She was very vulnerable at the time and is still annoyed by the fact that someone could take advantage of her so easily.

As the years go by, seniors can also find it more and more costly to maintain their home. Situations change and they no longer have the help or finances they need.

For seniors facing one of the most significant decisions in their life, it’s important to consider the process of downsizing a home.

Some things include:

  • Downsizing a large household with all the accumulated belongings
  • Overcoming anxiety and procrastination
  • Assessing whether to modify/repair a home or sell “as is”
  • Finding professionals for every step of the moving process
  • Working through family issues that may arise
  • Finding the most suitable type of senior accommodation

Once these things have been carefully discussed and evaluated, it may then be the right time to move from a memorable past into a relaxed, secure future.

Beverly made the decision to downsize and move. She currently lives in an assisted care private apartment close to her doctor and dentist, shopping amenities and her local library.

It has two bedrooms, one bathroom, open living, kitchen and dining area. There is plenty of room for her to have guests and family visits. There are also organized outings and activities if she wants to participate.

Beverly was relieved once the decision had been made. Deciding to move wasn’t an easy decision to make, but Beverly freely offers suggestions to others considering relocation.

First, she says to ask for all the help you need from family and friends then make a list of each room’s contents. To make this as simple as possible, we’ve created a handy moving checklist for seniors.

Next, invite the family members to take the items they desire. Then hold a garage sale and donate to charity anything in good condition but not sold. Contact a consignment or charity centre to sell any equipment of value and dispose of everything else.

Beverly took charge and made the decision to get the most out of her life. It’s a work in progress.’ she says. “At least I have the support I need and don’t have to worry about maintaining a big house. It’s a relief for myself and my family “

Finally, Beverley says, “don’t look back, just move! Your memories will always be with you no matter where you reside.”

It’s important to assess your individual situation and know that there are excellent alternatives that can lead to an improved lifestyle with less worry about maintenance, security and health-related issues.
